About Us
MLC’s Climate Justice Wing is a statewide coalition of individuals and grassroots and grasstops organizations focused on getting State level climate justice legislation passed and undertaking other climate justice advocacy initiatives.
Because it is difficult to get the Maryland General Assembly to agree to pass more than an extremely limited number of climate bills, we advocate with one voice for a limited number of bills to increase the odds of getting climate legislation passed. In selecting our priorities, each bill is evaluated through an equity lens, with a particular focus on how disadvantaged communities are affected by the bill and what role the communities had in shaping the legislation, what job opportunities are created or affected for communities of color and low income communities, and the climate impact.
We also engage in advocacy campaigns such as urging Governor Hogan to use the monies the General Assembly set aside for low-income weatherization and public transportation, to stop fracked gas pipeline projects on the Eastern Shore and in Charles and Prince Georges Counties, and to overturn Governor Hogan’s vetoes of many great pieces of legislation.
